Get involved and ensure a wedding day without a hitch

Lately, people are embracing the fact that grooms should be just as involved in the wedding preparation as the bride. And that they also want a perfect day with their partner. The idea that weddings are only the bride’s big day is no longer valid. If you’re one of those grooms that want to be involved in every part of the big day, here’s a wedding planning checklist to help you make the most of your time and ensure an unforgettable day for both you and your partner. Be sure to follow our wedding series for more tips on planning the perfect wedding.

Budget

Help your partner to set up your wedding budget. Identify how much the two of you will be able to contribute (and factor in any input from family). Plan the wedding around the budget and not the other way around. And don’t forget to budget for gratuities on the day.

Venues

Scout ceremony and reception venues with your partner and handle booking them once you’ve decided. Also, think about booking accommodation for the wedding party if your venue is a far drive.

Entertainment

Think about the type of music you and your partner both enjoy. Find a band, musician or DJ that specialises in this style of music. Once you’ve both decided on your wedding entertainment, you can help out by booking the artist or group.

To thank your loved ones for their help and support, consider buying gifts for your wedding party. For the bridal party, consider brooches or hairpins and for the groomsmen, think along the lines of customised cufflinks. Visit Canal Walk and find the perfect gift at NWJ Jewellery.

Honeymoon

Some might feel that the honeymoon is the groom’s responsibility. Whether this is the case with you or not, the honeymoon is the ideal element for you to help out with. Keep it a secret and surprise your partner with the destination of their dreams or plan it with them and take charge of the bookings. Visit Computicket, Flight Centre in Canal Walk.

Transportation

A major element of the wedding that’s often overlooked is transportation. Avoid a last-minute crisis by planning the day’s transportation ahead of time. Remember transportation to and from the different venues for the wedding party and possibly guests, transportation to and from the honeymoon, as well as ensuring all necessary items make it to the respective venues on time and in great condition.

Attire

Arguably the most prominent element of a wedding is the attire. In recent years, wedding suits for men have gone from plain and standard to exciting and detailed. Take the opportunity to look your utmost best with a tailored suit and some exciting details like quirky bow ties or graphic designer socks. Plan your attire in advance so your groomsmen can coordinate with you. Find your perfect fit in Canal Walk at stores like Eurosuit, Carducci, Bogart Man and Fabiani. For more suit retailers, see our Men's Fashion category.

Photography

Do some research in the months before your wedding day and invest in a wedding photographer or videographer. Make sure to talk the photographer through the day’s programme and the venue layout so they can plan their shots properly.

Ultimately, you’re just as much a part of this wedding as your partner is. While that means you’re free to express your vision, it also means that you can help to carry the wedding planning load.
