How to wear culottes in winter

Thanks to their versatile silhouette, culottes (those calf length pants, cut to resemble and hang like a skirt) are the go-to style choice for all trendy boss-babes, who are both on or off duty.

But, just because the temperature is dropping doesn't mean you need to banish them from your outfit routine in fact, they are the perfect alternative option to your faithful jeans or A-line skirt. The best way to style them is to wear them like you wear an A-line skirt, by either tucking in a blouse, or choosing a high-waisted pair and adding a cropped sweater or knit for winter.

Here are our 5 easy ways to ensure your culottes are on point for winter.

1. Find your flattering fit

When you're wearing heavy winter fabrics, choose tailored styles to avoid a bulky or shapeless look. It's important to choose the right length of culottes for your height. The most flattering are a mid-calf length, but if you are on the petite side, choose a pair that falls right below the knee.

Are you short and curvy? Culottes that end just below the knee and are high waisted are perfect for you.  Vertical stripes can also make your legs appear longer. Are you tall and curvy? Go for extra-long, wide legged culottes that skim your hips and thighs.

2. Functional Footwear

Choosing the right footwear is key for both your look and comfort. Add length (and polish) with a heeled, over-the-knee or cropped ankle boot (to cover up any exposed skin) or block heeled shoes. Or, go low-key with a normcore-worthy slide (with socks), cool sneakers, or the shoe of every blogger's choice -  the loafer. Remember that culottes highlight your ankles and feet, so have some fun with your shoes.

3. Layer your look

The fashionistas tend to pair their culottes with a large coat or chunky sweater on colder days. Wear a flattering turtleneck or fitted blouse underneath your winter jacket to balance out their flowy style. The top you choose should have less volume than the culottes. This is the only way to avoid looking like you have no waist, and you're drowning in fabric.

4. Man it up

Pair an over-sized suit jacket or camel coat with a pair of structured culottes for a menswear-inspired statement style. This look is so hot for the new winter season and is perfect for the office.

5. Accessorise to be extra

Accessories like a bold bandana and silver shoes will add essential details to a neutral look. Keep your look contemporary by wearing tone on tone (all grey, all black, all navy) but by simply adding the right accessories, you will keep your look on trend. Remember that culottes highlight your ankles and feet, so have some fun with your shoes.
