Hobbies to introduce to your teenager
Everybody needs a hobby and teenagers are no exception. As much as you would like them to, they can't study all day, every day. And not everyone is made for playing team sports. It's important for your teenager to have a hobby as it will give them something to do during their spare time, as well as set them up with something to possibly enjoy for the rest of their lives. Having a hobby also encourages socialisation and developing interests that will help them connect with other people.
So, if your teenager hasn't chosen a hobby yet, here are four hobbies you can introduce to them. However, you need to remember that, at the end of the day, it needs to be something that they want to do.
MUSIC
Most teenagers enjoy some or other form of music, whether it's pop, techno or rock an' roll. Playing an instrument is a good way to encourage your youngster to express themselves in a healthy and constructive manner. Just don't choose their instrument for them. Someone who likes guitar solos probably isn't going to want to learn to play the piano. Take them to a music store and let them have a look at the variety of musical instruments available. If you're looking for music shops in Cape Town, then look no further than Canal Walk. We have everything you need to get your teenager excited about playing a musical instrument. Soon, they will be wanting to play with others and, who knows, they may even end up joining a band that you can go out and support.
VOLUNTEERING
You may be thinking that volunteering isn't exactly a hobby, but it can be. If your teenager is passionate about helping those in need, working with animals or tutoring underprivileged children, volunteering may be right for them. It will encourage a feeling of social responsibility and will help them bond with people who care about the same causes as they do. And an added bonus is that it will look good on their applications if they choose to study further and when they look for work. Of course, they need to take it seriously and make a commitment to the cause of their choice.
THEATRE
Many people think that theatre is all about being on stage and reciting Shakespeare, but that's not the case. There are many different areas of theatre that your teenager can become involved with. If they are naturally artistic, perhaps they may be interested in painting backdrops or designing sets for various plays. Or maybe they don't want to be on stage, but want to direct those who do want to be in the spotlight. There are many opportunities in theatre and it's a good hobby for teenagers as there is likely a drama club at their school or in the community.
DANCING
Many parents are constantly trying to encourage their teenagers to exercise. This is why dancing is such a good option for a hobby. Your teenager can have fun and exercise at the same time. It's healthy and enjoyable. And there are dance classes almost everywhere. Whether they want to do modern dancing, ballroom dancing or ballet, there is something for every kind of dancer. They can decide that this is something they just want to do for fun or they can be more serious about their dancing and compete in one of the many competitions available locally.
It's important that your teenager has a hobby. It will help them grow their confidence, develop personal interests and make friends. Just remember that you can make suggestions, but they need to be the one to want to participate in a hobby of their choosing.
