5 ways to wear chino shorts

Fashion Inspo

If there's one item that will make all your year-round essentials (sweatshirts, collared shirts, t-shirts, trainers, etc.) summer-appropriate, it's a simple pair of chino shorts. They are perfect for almost every occasion, day or night, with a t-shirt or a blazer, sneakers or boat shoes. Basically your chino shorts work well with everything you would normally pair with chinos.

1. When it's hot - and you're not sure of your plans

The look: Chino shorts, cotton or linen shirt and a pair of boat shoes.

Why it's a winner: All these fabrics will keep you cool.

Bonus: The shirt makes this look a bit smarter than a t-shirt and shorts, so it will work no matter where your day takes you

2. When less is more

The look: Chino shorts, plain white t-shirt and minimal trainers

Why it's a winner: Throw on a jacket and you're super styled despite the fact that you're just wearing shorts and a tee.  The reason? Everything is nicely fitted and simple. Just make sure your T-shirt is crisp and very white!

3. When you want the look pulled together, but not like you're trying too hard

The look: Chino shorts, t-shirt, any mid-weight khaki jacket or shacket (shirt-jacket) and a pair of trainers.

Why it's a winner: It's the perfect on-trend weekend kit. As you know, you almost always need a jacket in Cape Town, and this one looks summery and light because of the colour. Jackets give your upper half structure and instantly smarten up an outfit.

4. When it's hot - and the dress code's smart casual

The look: Chino shorts, shirt, unstructured blazer and loafers

Why it’s a winner: Whether you're at a garden party or an outdoor (and fairly casual) wedding, chino shorts and an unstructured blazer is the perfect smart-casual statement.  The blazer's unstructured rather than tailored; the shorts are on the smarter side; the shoes are leather, but slip-on; and the shirt's not too formal—with a few buttons undone. Perfection.

5. When a t-shirt alone is not enough

The look: Chino shorts, long-sleeved t-shirt, casual jacket (or bomber) and minimal trainers

Why it’s a winner: A jacket makes a t-shirt and shorts look smarter. (And it keeps you warm when it cools down in the evening.) Also, this isn't too beachy or too preppy, so it works well no matter what time of the day it is or where you end up. It’s just a casual cool urban statement. You’re welcome.
