5 ways to wear your dungarees
Denim dungarees are everywhere right now. Naomi Watts, Dakota Johnson, Lily Aldridge, Alexa Chung and even the Duchess of Cambridge are all working them to perfection.
While sporting dungarees seems pretty foolproof (after all, everything matches with denim) figuring out the right shirt, shoes and accessories to pair with them, takes skill. But fear not, follow our 5 ways to wear your favorite childhood trend (and take note of our tips) and you'll be slaying those denim overalls like a pro.
1. Full Femme
If you're going for a pair of super trendy, over-sized and roomy dungarees choose an ultra-feminine shirt underneath. Lace tops, frilly details and off-the-shoulder shirts will help balance out the more masculine silhouette.
Pro tip: Fit is key. If you have a longer or shorter torso, try and find a pair of overalls with adjustable straps so there is no gaping (or pulling) in the crotch area. The most flattering style is cropped or rolled at the ankle. If you're curvy, you might prefer darker denim, which is nice and fitted around the waist and with a slim leg. Boyish figures can embrace baggier styles and stiffer denim, they may also find vintage-inspired washes are more flattering as the colour is not solid.
2. Stripes on top
Stripes are a guaranteed win, and will elevate the casual look of your dungarees to grown-up status. Channel your inner sailor with a blue-and-white striped shirt and you'll look super chic, we promise.
3. Classic white tee, knit & kicks
Keep your dungarees looking totally current by wearing them with a white T-shirt, or a ribbed knit and a pair of sneakers so long as it's plain and simple you can't go wrong. A chunky jumper or cashmere knit can make dungarees look more on point and a T-shirt more relaxed.
Pro tip: Adding an expensive accessory ups the adult factor. Carry your favourite splurge bag or sunnies to stay away from looking like a kid.
4. Buttons & Blazers
Paired with a button-down shirt and a blazer, you will give your dungarees a total style revamp. Wear with a pair of loafers for a polished look, or with an easy-wearing pair of converse for an on trend, model-off duty statement.
5. Fancy Footwork
As Vogue recently advised, the last thing dungarees should be is too considered, and that starts with your footwear. Classic trainers are effortless and easy, while teetering heels just jar. To glam the look up, try pairing them with a burgundy loafer and a slim knit. If you must wear heels, then reserve them for flared styles of dungarees.
Pro tip: Avoid the deliberate one strap look you don't work on a farm and even if you do you should have time to do up your clothing.
